a.s.r. and Alpina Group plant first of 10,000 trees on Engelenburg Estate
Planting: a mixed forest with more biodiversity
On the piece of forest where we are planting the new trees there was Norway spruce. This species has declined in vitality due to the drought of recent years. This has given an insect, the letter-setter, more opportunity and the Norway spruce has been dying rapidly. We are now taking the opportunity to introduce deciduous trees and shrubs on De Engelenburg estate that are not yet found here.
Tree species planted are winter lime and hornbeam. Shrubs planted are hawthorn, hazel, cardinal's hat, common bird cherry and buckthorn.
The planting creates more variety of species (biodiversity). Mixed forest with varied shrubs is beneficial to many species including songbirds and butterflies.
A mixed planting is also less susceptible to diseases and pests. The tree species we plant here also have above-average leaf litter and are therefore better for the forest floor and soil life.
About The Engelenburg Estate
The estate has a wide variety of plant and animal species, including red deer, roe deer and badgers. Thanks to its location right next to Brummen, De Engelenburg is a popular hiking and biking area.
The area is adjacent to and historically connected to Castle Groot Engelenburg. The castle, privately owned, currently serves as a hotel and restaurant.
You are cordially invited to come and enjoy the beautiful estate.
